After recovering from a leg injury, Conor McGregor is all set to make his much-awaited UFC return and he will face Michael Chandler at UFC 303 during International Fight Week on June 29.
The fight has been teased by the UFC for more than a year, with McGregor and Chandler coaching opposing teams in their MMA-based reality show 'The Ultimate Fighter' last year.
Finally, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) president Dana White has confirmed the date for the highly anticipated bout. White said the fight would take place at 170 pounds.
Irishman McGregor (22-6) has not fought since the clean break in his tibia resulted in a second TKO loss to Poirier in a row in July 2021.
Notably, McGregor has not fought since July 2021, when he broke his left leg in a fight with Dustin Poirier. The injury required the former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion to undergo surgery but he is now ready to return to the cage.
Ahead of their fight, the 35-year-old McGregor, who always uses trash-talk as a psychological weapon to get into the minds of his opponents, took a playful jab at Chandler.
McGregor posted a voice note on X, mimicking Chandler from a scene during their TUF shoot.
"We’re gonna fight right now? We’re gonna do this right now? Right here and right now?" the voice note said.
Soon after McGregor’s dig, Chandler gave a witty reply saying, "Conor, it’s too late to be scared."
Notably, McGregor (22-6) has just one UFC victory since 2016 . The Ireland fighter has fought only four times since then, not including a blockbuster boxing match against Floyd Mayweather in 2017. He lost back-to-back fights to Poirier in 2021, the latter via TKO due to the broken leg.
McGregor was the first UFC fighter to ever hold two divisional titles simultaneously, winning the lightweight belt in 2016 while already holding the featherweight championship.
On the other hand, Chandler (23-8) has not fought since a submission loss to Poirier at UFC 281 in November 2022.
The Missouri fighter is one of the greatest combatants in Bellator history. Chandler, who is a three-time champion at lightweight in the promotion, signed with the UFC as a free agent in 2020.
He has only lost to top fighters in the UFC, including former champion Charles Oliveira and Justin Gaethje.
