Despite the Minnesota Timberwolves’ impressive regular season, there were many who did not expect the young team to get past the vastly playoff experienced Kevin Durant and co. The Minnesota Timberwolves completed a shocking sweep of the Phoenix Suns in the first round of the NBA playoffs with a thrilling 122-116 victory on Sunday night. Anthony Edwards, the 22-year-old rising star, exploded for 40 points, including a clutch one-handed dunk to seal the win with under three minutes remaining.
Edwards dominated the second half, pouring in 31 points on efficient shooting (13-23 FG, 7-13 3PT).
His fiery performance overshadowed a valiant effort from Devin Booker, who poured in a game-high 49 points for the Suns. While Booker was nearly unstoppable, Minnesota received crucial contributions from Karl-Anthony Towns and Jaden McDaniels.
Anthony Edwards has truly had his fun throughout this series mocking his opponents every chance he got. The youngster has publicly accepted on many occasions that his idol and inspiration in the league is Kevin Durant but that surely did not stop him from sticking the loss in KD's face.
The game remained tight throughout, with the Suns refusing to go down without a fight. They even managed to tie it up in the fourth quarter before Edwards and McDaniels took over with clutch triples. Minnesota's win also saw thw loss of coach Chris Finch late in the fourth quarter due to an accidental collision with a player. The team displayed remarkable resilience and composure to close out the series.
The Suns, missing the sharpshooting of Grayson Allen (ankle injury), struggled to find consistent scoring outside of Booker and Kevin Durant (33 points). Minnesota's imposing size with Towns and Rudy Gobert also proved problematic for Phoenix's smaller lineups. The Timberwolves now face an anxious wait to see their second-round opponent, either the Denver Nuggets or Los Angeles Lakers. This series win marks a significant step forward for the young Wolves, who have announced themselves as a serious contender in the Western Conference.
