The officiating in the National Basketball Association (NBA) is under fire once again as the Detroit Pistons Head Coach Monty Williams is livid with the officials after his team lost 111-113 to the New York Knicks in controversial fashion.
The two Eastern Conference sides were engulfed in an intense affair with the Detroit Pistons leading 111-110 with just 24 seconds remaining in the game clock, Knick PG Jalen Brunson fired a three pointer which was missed.
After a back and forth scuffle for possession, With just 8 seconds remaining Pistons Ausar Thompson had the possession and was making a run to the opposite end. But Knicks Donte DiVincenzo ran his entire body into Thompson’s legs to stop the forward in what looked like a blatant foul.
The incident occured in front of the referee but the referee allowed the play to continue and the Knicks scored the winning basket with just two seconds remaining on the game clock.
This naturally infuriated the Pistons coach as he was furious with the decision on the sidelines. In his post match press conference, Williams took apart the officials decision and asked for a fair game before storming out of the conference room.
“Where’s the New York Media now? The absolute worst call of the season, no call and enough is enough”, Williams opened his rant on the officials.
Williams confirmed that the Pistons have filed all the necessary procedures that are required while registering a complaint against referee. But the Pistons head coach is tired of the NBA’s lack of action and same responses.
“We’ve done it the right way, we’ve called the league, we’ve sent in clips, we’re sick of hearing the same stuff over and over again,” said Williams.
Talking about the baffling nature of the no call Williams said that it was and abomination, “We had a chance to win the game and the guy dove into Ausar’s leg and there was a no call. That’s An Abomination. You cannot miss that in an NBA game. Period.”
This is not the first time the Pistons have been hard done this season by referee decisions according to Williams. He has admitted that the team is low on morale and is tired of the calls against them.
“That situation is Exhibit A of what we’ve been dealing with all season long. It’s ridiculous and we’re tired of it”.
Williams ended his rant by calling out the league and the referees that all they want is a fair game.
“We just want a fair game called. Period. And I got nothing else to say, we want a fair game and that was not fair. I’m done, ” Williams ended his rant and stormed out of the press conference without taking a single question.
This is another addition to the growing list of NBA teams being frustrated with the level of refereeing in NBA in the past year. The Los Angeles Lakers and LeBron James were also highly frustrated after they lost to the Phoenix Suns because the officials deemed a legit James three pointer to be a two-pointer. The Dallas Mavericks and owner Mark Cuban filed an official challenge against their loss to the Golden State Warriors in March last year. All the teams ever received were explanations via a press release.
The Detroit Pistons have endured an extremely tough season as they are bottom of the Eastern Conference with a record of 8-49. In a season full of hardships, the controversial loss to the Knicks will definitely sting the locker room.
