CSK Head Coach Explains Why MS Dhoni Is Not Coming Out To Bat Higher Up The Order In IPL 2024

Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming has revealed the reason why, despite being in red-hot form in the IPL 2024, MS Dhoni is not promoting himself to bat higher up the order for Men in Yellow. Dhoni has scored 87 runs at a strike rate of 255.88 in five innings this year.

MS Dhoni has been in red-hot form in the IPL 2024. He has come out to bat five times in seven matches for CSK so far and has remained unbeaten on all occasions. In his first outing, he hammered 37 runs from just 16 balls against the Delhi Capitals in Vizag and then scored one each against SRH and KKR. In the sixth match, Dhoni smacked three back-to-back sixes against Hardik Pandya on the first three balls he faced against MI, and on Friday (April 19), Dhoni remained unbeaten on 28 runs from nine balls against LSG.
Unlike the last few seasons, this time Dhoni is looking in great touch, but despite that, he hasn’t come out to bat at higher up the order for Men in Yellow. CSK’s strategy to hold Dhoni for the last few years despite his good form baffled many, but on Friday, CSK’s head coach Stephen Fleming revealed the reason why Dhoni is making limited appearances.
He issued a worrying update about Dhoni’s knee injury and said he hasn’t fully recovered from it, which is why the team management is taking a cautious approach.
"It's inspirational, isn't it? His batting this year, even in training, has been very crisp. The team isn't surprised with what he is doing because his skill level during the pre-season was very high.”
"Other years he has obviously had problems with his knee, and he is sort of recovering from that, which is why there are only a certain number of balls which he can function well."
The former New Zealand skipper, who has been associated with the CSK since the start of the league, first as a player and then as head coach, pointed out Dhoni’s 'two-three over' approach.
"I think everyone wants to see him for longer as we do, but that amount of time is about right. We need him for the tournament, and that 2-3 over cameo, he is owning that space.”
"It's up to the rest of the batting unit to get us to a good position where he can push us over the top. He is doing that pretty much every time at the moment, which is great to watch," Fleming said at the post-match press conference.
According to Fleming, Dhoni remains the franchise's heartbeat, and they are "enjoying every minute" of his presence as the fans shower him with love and adulation across venues.
"What an amazing atmosphere when he comes out and does play and entertain; it's exhilarating," Fleming observed.
"We are incredibly proud of what he has achieved. We marvel at the amount of love that he gets. It's no surprise with what he has done with Indian cricket and with CSK with us. We are incredibly proud that he is a part of our side and is pretty much the heartbeat of the side. We thoroughly enjoy it.
"We know we are beneficiaries of the career that he has had and is having. We enjoy every minute of it."
After winning four out of seven matches so far, CSK will next take the field on Tuesday (April 23) against LSG in the reverse leg, which will be played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. CSK has won all three matches played at Chepauk in the IPL 2024.
