KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sanju Samson has created history in the 2024 IPL
  • RR have qualifed for the playoffs
  • Samson took charge of RR in 2021
Sanju-Samson Rajasthan Royals (RR) were given great news a day before their clash against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Wednesday (May 15), as Lucknow Suepr Giants' (LSG) defeat to Delhi Capitals (DC) meant that they had sealed a place in the playoffs.
RR have had a dream season so far, having registered eight wins in 12 games, which sees them currently occupy second place in the table. RR and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are the only teams to seal their spot in the playoffs, with the 2008 champions now nearing an elusive top two spot.
Samson & Co. had started the season with eight wins in nine matches, but their campaign has hit a roadblock with three defeats in the last three matches.

Sanju Samson Creates History
RR's qualifcation for the playoffs in 2024 is the sixth time in history that the franchise have qualified for the playoffs of the IPL. Previously, the inaugural champions made the second round in 2008, 2013, 2015, 2018, and 2022.
Samson has written his name in the history books as the first-ever RR captain to lead the Jaipur-based franchise to the playoffs twice. Samson was in charge of the team when they reached the final in 2022. Shane Warne, Rahul Dravid, Shane Watson/Steve Smith, and Ajinkya Rahane have captained them to the playoffs.

Samson took over RR's captaincy ahead of the 2021 IPL and has transformed the team's fortunes. While they finished 7th in 2021, they finished 2nd in the table in 2022 and reached the final, where they lost to the Gujarat Titans in 2022. The Samson-led outfit narrowly missed out on a playoff spot in 2023 as they finished 5th in the table.
Samson is level with Shane Warne as the RR captain with the most wins for the franchise, with both winning 30 games while leading the franchise.
Samson could also become the first RR captain to reach the final twice.
