India registered a thrilling six-run win over Pakistan in their ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 match at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on Sunday. After their bowlers restricted India to a below average total of 119, Pakistan batters failed to deliver as they were restricted to 113/7 in 20 overs.
All-rounder Axar Patel played a crucial role in India's victory with both bat and ball. The left-handed batter was sent to bat at No. 4 position after India lost the early wickets of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
The 30-year-old Patel scored 20 off 18 and stitched a valuable partnership of 39 runs with Rishabh Pant before getting out to Naseem Shah.
When it comes to his bowling, Axar conceded just 11 runs in 2 overs and picked the wicket of Usman Khan. He bowed the crucial 16th over when Pakistan needed just 37 runs with 6 wickets in hand.
Axar gave away just 2 runs in the over and managed to outfox Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim with his clever bowling.
Days after India's famous victory, Patel opened up about the over against Wasim, revealing his game plan during that phase of the game, on Chahal TV.
"The plan was to not bowl in his range, as it was windy, so I didn't want him to hit six in the mid-wicket. That's why I spoke to the captain & told him that I need a point so that I can put it in the cut because the shot is also very difficult, it's okay if it's hit, otherwise it was very difficult. That's why I tried that," Axar said in a video posted by the BCCI on their social media handle.
Not only Axar, Rishabh Pant, who scored 42 runs from 31 balls against Pakistan, and Mohammed Siraj also spoke to Yuzvendra Chahal.
"There was nothing in my mind as such. Was just trying to hit with a positive mindset and keep it simple. The India-Pakistan match is always packed with pressure. When Baapu came, he practiced at 3-4th position in IPL. So when your mate comes in you get comfortable, as we were getting comfortable without thinking about anything," Pant said.
Meanwhile, Siraj, who scored crucial 7 runs, revealed that he worked on his batting skills during IPL.
"I practiced a lot in the nets even during the IPL. The runs from tailenders prove to be really crucial. In the end, we got to know how crucial my runs were, so I am really happy that we won," the Indian pacer said.
The Rohit Sharma-led India will now face USA in their next match at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on June 12, Wednesday.
