India and Delhi Capitals fast bowler Ishant Sharma opened up on his relationship with head coach Ricky Ponting after the team's impressive 19-run win over Lucknow Super Giants in an IPL 2024 match on Tuesday.
Invited to bat first, Delhi Capitals managed to score 208 with a good team performance. In reply, LSG couldn't chase the target as Ishant starred with the ball for DC at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
The 35-year-old pacer took three crucial wickets of Quinton de Kock (12 off 8), KL Rahul (5 off 3) and Deepak Hooda (0 off 2) and registered the impressive bowling figures of 3/34 in four overs.
The veteran seamer was named Player of the Match for his performance as Rishabh Pant led side won their last league match of IPL 2024.
Notably, Ishant has been the leader of Delhi Capitals' pace attack this season, picking 10 wickets in 9 matches with an average of 26.50 and an economy of 9.81. He used his swing to perfection with the new ball and has taken some crucial wickets for his side.
Following his impactful bowling display, DC head coach Ponting lauded the experienced pacer. The 49-year-old also recalled his battles with Ishant during his playing days.
Notably, in 2008, a 19-year-old Ishant troubled the then Australia skipper Ponting with his pace and bounce in a memorable Test match.
"We were fierce competitors on the field as you would expect a young Indian fast bowler early on in his Test career trying to pull up a fight. He gave me bit of a working one day at the WACA before he eventually got me out. It’s been a pleasure to coach and work with him.
He’s a great guy, we’ve actually become very close. We’ve got great respect for one another. He’s been a terrific leader of this bowling attack for the last four five years," said Ponting in a video shared by IPL on X.
Thereafter, Ishant also spoke about his relationship with Ponting, calling him his elder brother.
"We’re not coach and player anymore, he’s a kind of elder brother to me. He’s always there whenever I need him, I can call him anytime.I think it’s very great to have him as a coach. If you have someone like him who really pushes you to keep on trying new things and don’t be afraid if you don’t do well," said Ishant.
After winning their last league match against LSG, DC have kept their chances alive mathematically. However, they will depend on the results of SRH, LSG, RCB and CSK, due to their extremely poor NRR.
