Barcelona manager Xavi has allegedly emerged as a contender for the managerial position at Dutch powerhouse Ajax for the upcoming season. With Xavi reportedly set to depart from his current role at Barca, he might be considering new opportunities in the summer. Xavi took over the Barcelona reins from Ronald Koeman after a short stint with Qatari club Al-Sadd in 2021. During his tenure, he guided the team to clinch the La Liga title in his inaugural full season (2022-23), securing the league crown with a comfortable 10-point margin.
This season has presented significant challenges for the Spanish manager and his team, as they currently trail leaders Real Madrid by eight points. The circumstances at the club led Xavi to announce his decision to depart at the end of the season in February. According to Toni Juanmarti, Xavi is an appealing prospect for several clubs, including struggling Dutch giants Ajax. Ajax currently sit in fifth place in the Eredivisie, trailing league leaders PSV Eindhoven by 28 points after a particularly disappointing campaign. Throughout the season, Ajax has seen four different managers at the helm, including Maurice Steijn, Hedwiges Maduro, Michael Valkanis, and John Van't Schip. Interim manager Van't Schip has experienced the most success of the group this season, guiding the team away from the threat of relegation.
The Dutch giants are actively seeking a permanent replacement for Van't Schip ahead of the 2024-25 season, with their attention turned to Xavi. With the Spanish manager set to become available in the summer, he could be receptive to the opportunity of joining the Dutch outfit.
Barcelona are reportedly eyeing Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim as their next head coach, aiming to swiftly address their managerial situation. With Xavi's impending departure at the end of the season, the Spanish giants are in need of a new leader. Amorim, highly regarded for his accomplishments with Sporting CP, is among the most promising young managers in Europe.
Despite Liverpool's interest in the 39-year-old, Barcelona is now poised to prioritize his appointment, according to The Independent. However, securing a deal may prove challenging for La Blaugrana, given Amorim's ?13 million release clause. Nevertheless, the club's interest in the tactician is firm, and they are seriously considering him for the forthcoming managerial role.
