Daniil Medvedev lost to fellow Russian Karen Khachanov 6-3, 7-5 in the round of 16 of the Monte Carlo Masters on Thursday. He also got into a furious argument with a chair umpire and supervisor once more. The fourth seed, who had been to the quarterfinals of the previous two Monte Carlo tournaments, was never able to establish a strong lead against Khachanov.
Medvedev double-faulted to give Khachanov the lead at 5-3 after a tumultuous start that saw him break for the first four games. The world No. 17 then comfortably held service to win the opening set. In the second set, Medvedev overcame some early rustiness and led 5-4 up with a set point; however, he wasted the chance and could not break Khachanov's serve.
After receiving an incorrect call from a line judge, Medvedev immediately faded and threw his racket against the backboard due to Khachanov's hold breaking under strain. Before receiving a point punishment, Medvedev, who also got into an argument with the authorities during his victory over Ga?l Monfils on Wednesday, yelled at the umpire and supervisor, "Open your freaking eyes."
Khachanov makes his first appearance in the Monte Carlo last eight with the victory. “Mentally, even though I’ve lost a few hard matches to him on hard courts, I know he doesn’t like to play on clay and that gives me some extra confidence,” Khachanov said in his post-match interview.
“Sometimes I know Daniil can lose his mind. Sometimes he uses it as a tool, but it can get out of control sometimes. I tried not to look at him or focus on him, and just serve it out,” added Kachanov.
