The BCCI has reacted to Rohit Sharma's criticism of the Impact Player rule. The controversial rule was introduced by the BCCI ahead of the IPL 2023 season to enhance the entertainment factor but received mixed reviews from the cricket fraternity. The debate around the rule gained momentum after the Indian captain openly criticised it, saying that he is not a great fan of the rule due to its negative effects on the development of all-rounders.
"I generally feel that it is going to hold back (all-rounders) because eventually cricket is played by 11 players, not 12 players. I'm not a big fan of Impact Player (rule). You are taking out so much from the game just to make it a little entertaining for the people,” said Rohit while speaking on the Club Prairie Fire Podcast with Adam Gilchrist and Michael Vaughan.
"But if you look (at) genuinely, just the cricketing aspect of it... I can give you so many examples — guys like Washington Sundar, Shivam Dube are not getting to bowl, which for us is not a good thing," the veteran opener added.
The BCCI reacted to Rohit Sharma's criticism, saying that the board is open to reviewing the controversial rule. IPL council chairman Arun Dhumal said that the stakeholders will sit after the ongoing season of IPL 2024 and take the call on the rule, saying that 'nothing is cast in stone about its implementation'
"Now that such an observation has been made, we will definitely look into it. We will discuss with all parties involved and then take a call," IPL governing council chairman Arun Dhumal told The Telegraph on Friday.
"There are various pros and cons to any rule that is in place. We are open to any discussion once the season gets over... nothing is cast in stone about its implementation," Dhumal said.
The Impact Player rule allows the captains to substitute players in a game. Generally, the teams opt to substitute a batter with a bowler and vice versa as per game situation. Thus, the all-rounders are the ones that suffer the most. The prime example of the same is CSK all-rounder Shivam Dube, who has taken the IPL by storm with his blistering strokeplay.
Dube is also in line to get picked for the T20 World Cup, however, since CSK have not used Dube as a bowler, due to Impact Sub availability, there is uncertainty around his place in the squad. Had Dube bowled and performed well, his chances of getting picked would have increased manifold as India are looking for an all-rounder for the T20 World Cup squad.
