India have suffered a big setback before the 2023 World Cup as their ICC event-bound player will miss 2 ODIs against Australia. Speaking to the media after the final of the 2023 Asia Cup, captain Rohit Sharma delivered a big update on Axar Patel. Axar missed the final of the 2023 Asia Cup due to a left quadriceps strain.
"Axar Patel is likely to miss the first two ODIs against Australia while Iyer is 99 per cent fit," Rohit said. Sundar, who replaced Axar for the Asia Cup final, might stay with the team during the ODI series.
Axar suffered an injury during the Super Four match against Bangladesh. The BCCI was quick to call up Sundar, who is part of the squad for the Asian Games. The Asian Games-bound players are undergoing a camp in Bengaluru.
Sundar was straightaway drafted into the playing XI, but he didn't get a chance to bat or bowl. He remains to be in the scheme of things and could be seen in action against Australia. The Men in Blue will hope that Axar gets fit before the ICC event.
The teams can make changes to their respective squad by September 27, the day of the third India-Australia ODI. Axar can prove his fitness for the ICC event by featuring in the third ODI.
The three India-Australia ODIs will be played on September 22, 24 and 27. Following that, India will take part in two warm-up games against England, on September 30, and Netherlands, on October 3. India will open their World Cup campaign against Australia on October 8.
