KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • BCCI wants Zaheer Khan or Laxmipathi Balaji as India's bowling coach.
  • Gautam Gambhir suggested the name of Vinay Kumar.
  • The board does not want one person to have full authority.
Gautam Gambhir replaced Rahul Dravid as the head coach of the Indian cricket team. Dravid parted ways with team India following a win in the T20 World Cup 2024. Gambhir's strong portfolio, which included an IPL 2024 title with KKR, made him the front-runner to replace Dravid. The BCCI handed a five-year contract to Gambhir where the former captain will helm the team in five ICC events, including ICC Champions Trophy 2025, T20 World Cup 2026, ODI World Cup 2027, and WTC 2025-2027.
Meanwhile, Gambhir reportedly asked BCCI to sign Abhishek Nayar as the assistant coach while he put forward the name of Vinay Kumar as the bowling coach. While BCCI reportedly has no objections to Abhishek Nayar joining the team India support staff, they are unlikely to rope in Vinay Kumar.
A BCCI source told Times Now that the board does not want one person (head coach) to have full authority. The board is keen to hire Zaheer Khan or Lakshmipathi Balaji as the Indian bowling coach. Zaheer Khan has significant leadership experience and worked as Director of Cricket Operations with Mumbai Indians while Balaji has served as the bowling coach for Chennai Super Kings.
The BCCI want a bowling coach who can groom the upcoming crop of fast bowlers like Harshit Rana, Mayank Yadav, and Tushar Deshpande, to name a few, and the board feels that Zaheer Khan or Balaji will fit the role better. While the discussions are underway, no decision has been made yet by the board. Meanwhile, T Dilip is likely to be retained as the fielding coach.
Gautam Gambhir will take charge as team India head coach from the India tour of Sri Lanka later this month where the team will play three T20Is and as many ODIs.
