Mumbai Indians were up against Rajasthan Royals in match No. 14 of IPL 2024 on Monday (April 1), which was played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. In their first home game of the ongoing season of the cash-rich league, MI went down by six wickets. After being invited to bat first, MI lost Rohit Sharma and Naman Dhir in the first over itself (both out for golden ducks by Trent Boult), and then Dewald Brevis (0) and Ishan Kishan (16) also returned back to the pavilion when the team’s score was 20 runs in 3.3 overs. Thanks to skipper Hardik Pandya’s 34 and Tilak Varma’s 32, MI managed to post a total of 125 runs on the board for the loss of nine wickets, but it didn’t prove to be enough in the end.
For the Royals, Boult and Yuzvendra Chahal picked up three wickets each, and two MI batters were sent back to the pavilion by Nandre Burger. In reply, RR also lost four wickets, but Riyan Parag’s second back-to-back fifty helped them reach the required target in 15.3 overs for the loss of four wickets.
By getting the better of the Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals have moved to the No. 1 position in the IPL 2024 points table, whereas MI remained at the bottom.
After losing his third straight match as Mumbai Indians captain on Monday, Hardik Pandya equaled an unwanted record that was previously held by Harbhajan Singh. The 30-year-old became the second captain to lose his first three matches as Mumbai Indians captain in the IPL.
Hardik lost his first match as MI skipper against the Gujarat Titans by six runs on March 24 in Ahmedabad. In the second match, Sunrisers Hyderabad beat Mumbai Indians by 31 runs in Hyderabad on March 27.
During the inaugural edition of the IPL, Harbhajan led MI in the first three matches and suffered defeats by five wickets against RCB, six runs against the Chennai Super Kings, and 66 runs against the Punjab Kings.
Hardik, who joined MI from the Gujarat Titans in a trade deal last year ahead of the IPL 2024 auctions, is the ninth player to lead the five-time champions in the world’s richest franchise cricket league.
Harbhajan was MI’s first-ever captain in the IPL, and he was followed by Shaun Pollock, Sachin Tendulkar, Dwayne Bravo, Ricky Ponting, Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard, and Suryakumar Yadav.
