Indian Team Coaching Is Slightly Different: Kumble Reacts To Reports Of Gambhir Becoming India's Head Coach

Anil Kumble has reacted to the reports of Gautam Gambhir becoming the new head coach of Team India. Gambhir, who was Kolkata Knight Riders' mentor in IPL 2024, is reportedly the frontrunner to replace Rahul Dravid after the 2024 T20 World Cup. KKR defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final to lift the IPL title after a decade.

  • Gambhir was KKR's mentor in IPL 2024
The BCCI is looking for a new head coach for Team India and the aspirants had to apply for the top job by May 27. There is no report on the former players who have applied for the top position and the fans are waiting for an update from the BCCI. The new head coach will be replacing Rahul Dravid, whose stint ends after the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Anil Kumble has reacted to the reports of Gambhir taking over as the head coach and shared his take. Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, the former India head coach said: "You have to give him time. We have seen Gautam handle teams; he has been captain for India, for his franchise, for Delhi. So he has all the credentials to be that but Indian team coaching is slightly different. So you will have to give him time to settle in. Like I mentioned, if he does take up the job, he will have the task of looking at not just the current lot but also the future of Indian cricket."
While there is no official word about Gambhir, India Today recently reported that he is set to become the new head coach of Team India. Gambhir came into contention after his success with Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024.
Gambhir, who joined KKR as theIr mentor before IPL 2024, coached the Shreyas Iyer-led side to a title win in the tournament. KKR defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final.
Gambhir started his coaching career with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in 2022. They made it to the second round of both seasons. LSG lost the eliminators in both seasons under Gambhir's mentorship. He left LSG before IPL 2024 and made his return to KKR after six seasons.
The former India opener had a seven-year-long stint with KKR as a player. He joined the franchise before the IPL 2011 mega-auction and captained them till IPL 2017. The Kolkata-based franchise won two IPL titles under his captaincy.
He moved to Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2018 mega-auction and captained them in six matches before stepping down. He handed over the charge to Shreyas Iyer, who now leads KKR.
The new Team India head coach will have a three-and-a-half year-long stint. There is no separate coaching theory in Indian cricket and the new coach will coach the team in all three formats. The new coach will take over the charge starting the series against Zimbabwe.
