Mumbai Indians played their first home match of IPL 2024 on Monday (April 1) against Rajasthan Royals. In match No. 14 of the IPL 2024, which was staged at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, the five-time champions, however, went down by six wickets against the Sanju Samson-led side. For Mumbai, three out of the top four batters got out for a golden duck.
The loss on Monday was MI’s third straight defeat in IPL 2024, and with 0 points, they remain at the bottom of the points table. During the match against RR, MI batted first and could only manage to post a total of 125 runs on the board for the loss of nine wickets. For the hosts, skipper Hardik Pandya top-scored by making 34 runs from 21 balls.
In reply, the Royals chased down the target of 126 runs in 15.3 overs for the loss of four wickets. For the Sanju Samson-led side, Riyan Parag top-scored by remaining unbeaten on 54 runs from 39 balls.
In his first match of the IPL 2024, MI pacer Akash Madhwal finished with figures of 3 for 20 in four overs. The 30-year-old fast bowler from Roorkee dismissed Sanju Samson, Jos Buttler, and Ravichandran Ashwin. While Samson was bowled by him, Buttler was caught near the boundary line by Piyush Chawla for an individual score of 13 runs from 16 balls.
At the time of Buttler’s wicket, RR’s score was 48 for 3 in 6.3 overs, and since there was still a chance for the Mumbai Indians to make a comeback in the game, it got MI owners Akash Ambani and Nita Ambani excited, and the video of their celebration after England’s white-ball captain's wicket went viral on the internet.
