Not Rishabh Pant! Harbhajan Singh Picks 29-Year-Old As First-Choice Wicketkeeper For India In T20 World Cup
Former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh made a bold pick while naming the first-choice wicketkeeper for India in the T20 World Cup. India have Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant as wicketkeepers in the T20 World Cup squad. Harbhajan Singh feels India should play Samson over Pant in the T20 World Cup playing XI as Samson batted well in IPL.

Former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh feels Sanju Samson should be India's first-choice wicketkeeper for the T20 World Cup. Samson was picked in the India squad after a stunning show in the IPL 2024 where he scored 504 runs in 13 matches. This was the first time in IPL history that Samson crossed the 500-run mark. Samson, however, might fail to find a place in the first-choice playing XI as India have Rishabh Pant in the squad. Pant made a return to cricket after a long hiatus due to a massive car accident and performed well in IPL, scoring 446 runs at a strike rate of 155.
Harbhajan though feels that Samson should start for India given his current form. Harbhajan backed Rishabh Pant's selection in India's squad for T20 World Cup and said that he looked fit and kept well, however, added that Pant was not at his best with the bat. Harbhajan added that he would like to see Sanju Samson given an opportunity ahead of Rishabh Pant.
"Rishabh Pant was playing well in the IPL. After coming out of the injury, he looked fit, his wicket-keeping was good. Batting also was not at his best but it was good. So I think this decision is fine. But Sanju Samson is playing very well. So I would like to see Sanju Samson given a chance first because he is continuously performing well...It's good to see that Rishabh Pant is back. I hope Rishabh Pant plays well for India and does something special..." said Harbhajan Singh to ANI.
Harbhajan also spoke on India's squad for the T20 World Cup and pointed out that the team is one pacer short. The former India cricketer also said that India should have picked Rinku Singh in the squad as he is one player who could have won the game for India in tough situations. Harbhajan opined that India should not have picked four spinners in the squad.
"The team is overall good, but I think there is one less fast bowler in the team and Rinku Singh should have been included. He is such a player who can hit 60 runs in 20 balls and make India win. 4 spinners are too much, 3 were enough. 4 spinners will never play together in a match. Only 2-3 spinners will play according to the condition. Now, that the team has been selected, I wish Team India all the best and I hope they bring the cup back," Harbhajan added.
