'You Don't Need Big Names...': Gavaskar's Huge Remark On Star Players Amid Rise Of Jaiswal, Sarfaraz And Jurel

India owe their Test series win over England to the youngsters. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel have made a clear statement that they are keen to pounce on every opportunity presented to them and they are very capable of keeping the best players out of the playing XI. Sunil Gavaskar said that the England series is the best response to players who think that the team can't survive without them.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sunil Gavaskar praised youngsters.
  • Gavaskar said cricket is a team game.
  • He said India don't need big names.
No Virat Kohli for the series, no KL Rahul after the first test, no Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah for a match, yet India head into the fifth and final Test in Dharamsala with an unassailable 3-1 lead in the series. The highlight for India of the remarkable series win has been the performance of youngsters. Yashasvi Jaiswal has been brilliant for India. He has scored the bulk of India's runs in the series. With 655 runs, including two double-hundreds, he is the leading run-scorer of the series.
Shubman Gill, even though he is an established player, has been outstanding as well. He scored a gritty century in the second innings of the Vizag Test to help India set a challenging target for England. Gill smashed 105 out of India's 255 runs in the second innings as the Rohit Sharma-led side posted a challenging target of 399 runs. England lost the game by 106 runs and Gill's knock was the difference.
After piling on tons of runs in domestic cricket, Sarfaraz Khan got to make his debut in the third Test in Rajkot and he responded with back-to-back fifties, drawing massive appreciation from the cricket fraternity. In the fourth Test, Dhruv Jurel hogged the limelight after his magnificent 90-run knock in the first innings helped India get close to England's score of 353. Jurel showed great temperament in the second innings too as he played an unbeaten 39-run knock to help India chase 192.

Sunil Gavaskar Fires Warning For Senior Players

Meanwhile, the template for the England series was very similar to India's historic series win in Australia during the 2020/21 tour when a depleted team India scripted a memorable comeback to win the series. The team suffered a shambolic defeat in the Adelaide Test after getting bowled out for 36 and lost a few key players to injuries. The odds were heavily against India but gritty Cheteshwar Pujara and flamboyant Rishabh Pant helped India win the series 2-1
Legendary India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar fired a warning to senior players, saying that the Australia and England series are a clear statement to anyone who believes the team cannot succeed without him.
“India missed a lot of big names in Australia but they still managed to pull off a fantastic win not just in Gabba but also in Melbourne. They came back after being bowled out for 36. Winning in Melbourne then they battled hard to save the Sydney Test match. If Rishabh Pant stayed on the crease for half an hour then India could have won that match as well. But the courage, stamina, grit and determination that the young Indian players showed during that Australia tour was visible even this time around against England,” Gavaskar said on Sports Tak.
“That’s why I always say, you don’t need big names… If any big name thinks that India won’t win without him these two series have shown that whether you are there or not (it doesn’t matter). Cricket is a team sport. It doesn’t depend on one individual,” he added.
