Emi Martinez is truly a one of a kind player whose career trajectory is unlike anything world football has ever seen. From being nothing more than a bench warmer throughout most of his time at Arsenal to leading Argentina alongside Lionel Messi to their first World Cup victory since 1986.
Over the course of the past two years, Martinez has time and time again proved his worth and there are not many keepers in world football who are as efficient as the Argentinian when it comes to penalty shootouts. Alongside his great reading of the game, he is also well known for his shit housery and antics which are known to play mind games with the penalty taker. A peculiar incident took place during Aston Villa's win over French side, LOSC Lille in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Conference league quarter-finals when the 2022 World Cup golden glove winner was shown a second yellow card but was not sent off.
The reason behind Martinez not being sent off is that he was was shown the second yellow during the penalty shootouts and according to IFAB rule 10.3 which stipulates that the bookings are not carried through to penalties.
"Yellow cards and warnings from the game are not carried forward into penalties but a player who was shown a red card during the game cannot take part. Players, substitutes, substituted players and team officials can get A red or yellow card during penalties."
Emi Martinez is surely one of the most hated men in French football with the Argentinian being the main factor behind France’s 2022 World Cup final loss. To rub salt in the wounds of his French opponents, Martinez’s off the pitch antics and taunting following the world cup only added to the hostile environment which saw him being booed throughout the 120 minutes.. He came back to haunt French football fans during Villa’s penalty shootout win as he saved Benjamin Andre and Nabin Bentaleb’s penalty to seal the game.
"I get booked after 30 minutes and we're losing the game so I don't know what the referee wanted for me. In the shoot-out, there was no ball on the penalty spot and I was asking for a ball from the ball boy... and then I get booked. I just don't understand the rules," said Emi Martinez to TNT Sports after his spot kick heroics.
Aston Villa are on the highest of highs as of now as they followed their excellent 2-0 victory away against Arsenal on the weekend with their first trip to a European semi-finals since 1982. They will face Olympiacos in the semi-finals of the Conference League to try and book their spot in the finals.
