Major League Pickleball (MLP) is shaking things up for the 2024 season with innovative draft formats designed to add strategic depth and excitement for both teams and fans. The Premier Level Draft will see teams engage in a dynamic bidding war for top talent, while the Challenger Level Draft utilizes a snake format to ensure balanced rosters. This, coupled with a busy 11-event season including playoffs, promises a thrilling year of MLP action.
Premier Level Draft: Strategic Bidding for Top Talent
Remote Draft: Teams will participate in the draft remotely.
48 Players Selected: Each team will draft four players, with two men and two women joining their roster.
Dynamic Bidding Process: A first-of-its-kind bidding system will determine the draft order. Teams will submit bids for the coveted first overall pick and subsequent slots. The team with the highest bid for a particular slot gets to select a player first from the remaining pool.
Budgetary Constraints: Teams will have a set budget to spend on their winning bids, adding a strategic layer to the selection process.
Three Minutes per Pick: Teams will have a limited time window (three minutes) to make their selection after winning a draft slot.
Challenger Level Draft: Snake Format for Balanced Rosters
Remote Draft: Similar to the Premier Level, the Challenger Level Draft will take place remotely.
72 Players Selected: Teams will select six players (three men and three women) to build their rosters, allowing for more lineup flexibility during events.
Snake Draft Format: This format ensures a balance of talent throughout the league. The draft order will reverse after each completed round (snake its way back), giving lower-ranked teams a chance to grab high-value players in later rounds.
Randomized Draft Order (One Week Prior): A week before the draft, the order in which teams will select players will be randomly determined.
Three Minutes per Pick: Just like the Premier Level, teams will have three minutes to make their selections during the Challenger Level Draft.
Beyond the Draft: A Busy Season Awaits
The 2024 MLP season promises a packed schedule with 11 events spread across 10 different states. This includes eight regular-season tournaments, a Mid-Season Tournament that will add another layer of excitement, and two rounds of playoffs to crown the ultimate champion.
