KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Ahmedabad and Chennai are hosting the IPL 2024 playoffs
  • Chennai will host the final
  • SRH, KKR, RR, and RCB have qualified
After almost two months of grueling cricket, it is time for the business end of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL), with the trophy taking the tournament into the playoffs. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Rajasthan Royals (RR), and Royal Challengers Bengaluru are the four teams in the race to win the trophy over the next week in Ahmedabad.
The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad will host the first qualifier between SRH and KKR as well as the RR vs. RCB eliminator. Later, the teams will play the second qualifier and the final at the MA Chidamabarm Stadium in Chennai.

Why Are Ahmedabad and Chennai Hosting the IPL 2024 Playoffs and Final?
Ahmedabad and Chennai are hosting the playoffs despite both Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Gujarat Titans (GT) not qualifying for the playoffs. The two venues had hosted the second round of the tournament in 2023 too, as CSK and GT played the qualifier 1 in Chennai and the final against each other in Ahmedabad.
In the 2024 IPL, the two venues have got the big matches as a result of the two teams reaching the summit clash last year. As a precedent, the IPL has decided that the home venue of the losing finalist will host the first qualifier and eliminator, while the native city of the winner will host the opening match of the tournament, the second qualifier, and the final.
It is worth pointing out that this has not always been possible due to logistical issues or the tournament being shifted out of India. For example, Chennai did not get to host the final in 2019 and 2022, while Jaipur was unable to host playoff games last year despite RR reaching the final in 2022. Mumbai was not able to host the final in 2014 or 2016 either.
