KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Champions Trophy 2025 is scheduled to be held in Pakistan.
  • India are reportedly not willing to travel to the country.
  • Mohsin Naqvi has made a big claim.
India will aim to win their next ICC trophy after the T20 World Cup 2024 when they take part in the Champions Trophy, which is all set to return after 8 years in 2025. The tournament will be played in Pakistan, as they would be hosting their first ICC tournament since the 1996 ODI World Cup. However, reports state that time and again, India have refused to travel to the country owing to the strained relationship between the two neighbours. There were even reports that the tournament might be played in a hybrid model. However, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) president Mohsin Naqvi has now made a massive claim, and that involves none other than Jay Shah.
In a media interaction, Mohsin Naqvi said that the Champions Trophy will be held in Pakistan, and they are also in contact with the BCCI secretary Jay Shah. They have also contacted the boards of all the teams that are taking part in the Champions Trophy as well.
“Champions Trophy will be held in Pakistan, we are in touch with the BCCI Secretary. [We are] also in contact with the boards of the teams participating in the Champions Trophy," Naqvi said.
Recently, Jay Shah was elected as the ICC chairman unopposed. He is still holding the post of the BCCI secretary, but will have to leave it before he takes the helm of affairs at the apex world cricketing body from December 1. Hence, a lot will depend on Shah as to whether India will indeed travel to Pakistan for the tournament. Incidentally, PCB were the only board to not vote for Jay Shah to become the ICC chairman.
India last travelled to Pakistan in 2008 for the Asia Cup. The two countries have not played a single bilateral series since 2013, and only face each other in ICC tournaments now. The last time India and Pakistan have faced each other was in the group stage of the T20 World Cup, which India won by 5 runs.
